American Lung Association applauds Cook County Board for passing cigarette taxBy Staff reports

The American Lung Association in Greater Chicago applauds the passage of the $1-per-pack cigarette tax increase introduced by Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle.

The increase raised the total taxes collected on cigarettes in Cook County to $3 per pack, in addition to the city, state and federal cigarette taxes.

“Raising the cigarette tax is the most effective way to reduce youth smoking and encourage adults to quit smoking,” said Harold Wimmer, president and CEO of the American Lung Association in Greater Chicago.

“Each time a cigarette tax increase is implemented, the Illinois Tobacco Quitline sees a sizable increase in calls from smokers wanting to quit. Quitting smoking greatly reduces a person’s chances of developing lung cancer, COPD and other health issues.”
