Another Alabama university moves to ban tobacco campus-wide

BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- Another public university in Alabama is moving to permanently ban smoking on all campus properties.

Alabama State University President William Harris said today he is using his executive authority to temporarily ban the use of all tobacco products campus-wide.

"The best science we have says that smoking causes grave difficulties to health," he said. "And we want our young people and our colleagues to be as healthy as possible."

Harris' announcement comes as university officials work toward a permanent policy that would ban tobacco campus-wide, including smokeless tobacco and new electronic cigarettes.

The university's board of trustees is slated to consider that policy in September.

The board tabled during its meeting today a measure to declare the campus smoke-free upon concerns from Trustee Taylor Hodge Jr., who objected to considering the issue before the final policy was completed.
